Mammoth Miracle

A New Book by Brent Houk

(Coming Soon)

In 1975, Bobo Davenport got fired from his job as the head basketball coach at Grayson County High School in Kentucky. In his twenty-five years as a coach, Bobo had never coached a team to the Kentucky state tournament. Shortly after his firing, he found a new job at Edmonson County High School, an underachieving team that had likewise never made its way into the state tournament. Edmonson County is home to Mammoth Cave National Park, literally 100 miles—and figurative galaxies—from Louisville, the power center of Kentucky high school basketball in the 1970s. Mammoth Miracle is the true story of a down-on-his-luck coach and the small, rural high school that he led to the most surprising outcome in Kentucky high school basketball history.

Back Screen

Back Screen is a newsletter inspired by the basketball action in which an offensive player sets a screen to free a teammate who cuts to the basket. A back screen is a misdirection play that often catches a defender unaware, leading to a surprise opening that leads to an easy basket. Our Back Screen newlsetter launched in October 2025 to bring unfamiliar stories that surprise readers with a player, a game, or a basketball-related story that they didn’t see coming.
